The University programme is an approved member of the RIBA CPD network and Intelligent Buildings Group (IBG); it has been supported by the EPSRC and has programme contributions from many professionals in industry and academia.
With its multi-disciplinary approach, the course encourages the use of leading-edge design and technology to support the development of intelligent facilities into the next century whilst addressing business and environmental considerations. In its eight year, the course can be studied part-time full-time or as an individual CPD (Continuing Professional Development) modules and consists of taught modules, work based assignments and a dissertation. Modules are structured to reflect the fact that Intelligent Buildings are designed and managed to meet changing environmental, business and human needs. The intensive programme explores the complex balance of intelligent building elements, and includes the latest thinking and developments in areas such as: Innovative technology Design and construction of the fabric Energy usage A building's marketability Intelligent controls Business objectives Sustainability Whole life cost effectiveness Need of building occupiers Investment and operational management issues Course Director, Professor Derek Clements-Croome, is editor and part-author of the book Intelligent Buildings: Design, Management & Operation published by Thomas Telford in September 2004 which reflects the main structure of the course.
